Richard Edwin “Rick” Miller, 84

Richard Miller Richard Edwin “Rick” Miller, 84, of Fleming Island, FL passed away Saturday, August 29, 2020.  Rick was born July 31, 1936  in Keosauqua, Iowa to the late Ernest and Addie Miller.  He moved to the area in 1973 after spending his previous years all over the country due to honorably serving his country for 30 years.  Rick spent 10 years in the United States Marine Corps which included war service in Korea and 20 years in the United States Navy with war service in Vietnam.  He earned many medals during his military service, including a Navy Commendation Medal 2 Stars, Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Unit Commendation 2 Stars, Meritorious Unit Commendation with 4 Stars, Battle E 2 Stars, Navy Good Conduct Medal, Marine Good Conduct Medal with 1 Star, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal 6 Stars, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon 1 Star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Unit with Palm, Vietnam Campaign with Device, Air Force Longevity with Oak Leaf, along with other awards and commendations.  After retiring from the military, Rick was employed by and retired from Northrop Grumman.  He dedicated much of his free time to volunteering with children’s athletics, Toys for Tots, as well as numerous other activities with the Marine Corps League.  Rick was also an accomplished carpenter and woodworker.  He was an active member of Harvest Baptist Church.

Rick was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Mary Margaret Miller; his parents, Ernest and Addie Miller; two brothers, Doug Miller and Curtis Miller; and two sisters, Margaret and Maxine.  He is survived by his son, Richard E. Miller, Jr. (Elizabeth); two daughters, Kathy Moyers (Bruce) and Nancy Rae Johnson (Kevin); one sister, Susan Holt; two brothers, Glen Miller and Terry Miller; 7 grandchildren, Athena, Rita, Kyle, Keith, Kieron, Charlie and Paige; his Chihuahua, Angelina; as well as many other family members and friends.  He will be missed by too many to count.

A celebration of Rick’s life will be held Thursday, September 3, 2020 at 11am in the chapel at Russell Haven of Rest.  Visitation with the family will be one hour prior at 10am.  As this is a celebration of Rick’s life, the family requests you wear bright colors and not “funeral black”.
