Paula Jean Ekman Newman, 80, of Fleming Island Florida passed away Monday, July 2, 2018 surrounded by her family. Paula was born in New Orleans LA and spent her childhood there. She was one of 4 children and the only girl so a princess had been born!  At the age of 13 her family relocated to Chicago where she would spend the majority of her life. She attended College and obtained a degree in education. Paula married Alan A. Newman and enjoyed 35 years of a loving and successful marriage.  Together they raised 2 children, Neil M. Newman and Marla R. Newman-Budde. They were wonderful parents and raised their children with an abundance of love. Paula maintained many lifelong friendships and enjoyed travel and raising her children in a close nit social circle.  Paula was an avid tennis player and was involved in many causes. She was a pioneer for woman’s rights, a member of her local PTA, a member of the Democratic Women’s Alliance and a regular contributor to her favorite causes.   She spent the majority of her professional career as a social worker for those who are mostly forgotten.  After the death of her beloved husband, Paula moved to Fleming Island Florida where she enjoyed her full retirement watching her granddaughter grow up to become a beautiful person inside and out, playing bridge with “the bridge ladies”, swimming at the local pool, eating at her favorite restaurants, and attending theatre events whenever possible.  She maintained her commitment to her community by continuing her membership with the Clay County Democratic Women’s Alliance, The Elks Club, as well as a variety of local philanthropic causes. Paula is survived by her children, Marla (Jeff) Newman- Budde, and Neil Newman, granddaughter, Sarra Herring, her step grandchildren, her great granddaughter, Addie Mae, and extended family and friends.

Paula will be missed but can finally rest without pain.
