Melba Laverne Dowdy, 87
Melba Laverne Dowdy, age 87, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2026, at The Pavilion for Health Care at Penney Retirement Community in Penney Farms, Florida. The Pavilion had been her comforting home since October 2023, following an ischemic stroke. Melba was a true warrior, facing numerous health challenges throughout her life—including surviving breast cancer and two strokes—with immense bravery and grace.
Melba was born on December 11, 1938, the fourth of seven children to the late Walter Drew Jackson and Vernie Bell Jackson. Raised on the Northside of Jacksonville, Florida, she grew up in a hardworking household where her father was a carpenter and farmer, and her mother was a dedicated homemaker. She attended Norwood Elementary and Andrew Jackson High School.
As a young woman, Melba married and dedicated herself to raising three children, living first in Jacksonville and later in Live Oak. She eventually returned to Jacksonville, where she worked at Dairy Queen. Some time later, she met James Carlton Dowdy. James knew instantly that she was the one, though it took a little convincing; he famously won her heart by taking her to see the James Bond movie, Goldfinger, on their very first date. They built a beautiful blended family, adding a daughter, Shirley, and welcoming James’s son, Patrick. They lived on Jacksonville’s Westside, later moving to Black Creek in Middleburg.
With five children at home, Melba balanced family life with hard work, spending many years in the warehouse at Sav-A-Stop in Orange Park. Later in life, she found great joy in babysitting most of her grandchildren, ensuring they were surrounded by her love while their parents worked.
A woman of deep faith, Melba was a devoted member of the Baptist community throughout her life. In the mid-1970s, the family moved to Green Cove Springs, where they joined Russell Baptist Church. Under the mentorship of Pastor Jack Hall, James followed the call to the ministry. Melba faithfully stepped into her role as a pastor’s wife, supporting him wholeheartedly when he became the Pastor of Orangedale Baptist Church. She taught Sunday School, organized church events, and served her congregation beautifully until James’s sudden passing on Easter morning in 1998.
Later in life, she moved to the Argyle Forest area and joined Shindler Drive Baptist Church. She deeply loved her Sunday School class, “The Joy Club.” This tight-knit sisterhood brought her immense comfort, especially through the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, when her classmates kept her spirits high with regular phone calls and porch drop-offs.
Beyond her faith, Melba’s true passion was dancing. Though family life put her dancing dreams on hold for a time, she later threw herself into line dancing and ballroom lessons at various senior centers across Clay and Duval County. Even when back fractures eventually prevented her from dancing herself, she still found immense joy in watching others take the floor. Above all, her greatest happiness came from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were the absolute center of her world.
Melba is preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Carlton Dowdy; her parents, Walter Drew and Vernie Bell Jackson; and her siblings, Bobby Jackson, Christine Stockwell, Helen Deatherage, and Patricia Edwards.
She is survived by her loving siblings, sister Barbara Barbour (Jackson) and brother Ken Jackson. She leaves behind a rich legacy through her living children: Sherrie Poblete, Wayne Brannan (Tami), Carol Smith (Bob), Shirley Thompson (Rob), and step-son Patrick Dowdy (Laura). She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren: Alicia Poblete, Carlos Poblete, Chance Brannan, Brandon Smith, Cereina Hall, Christina Thompson, Casey Thompson, and Ethan Dowdy; and her adored great-grandchildren: Emma, Spencer, Jayden, Noah, Lillian, Violet, Larue, Jaxson, and Saige.
A service celebrating Melba’s life will be held Thursday, October 1, 2026 at 1:00pm in the chapel at Russell Haven of Rest with Dr. Donnie Elkins officiating. Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior at 12:00pm. Burial will follow in the Heritage Section of Russell Haven of Rest.
