Ligaya Cruz Velasco, 81

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Ligaya Cruz Velasco, who departed this life on May 23, 2025, at the age of 81.  Ligaya was a beloved and devoted Mother, Grandmother, relative and friend and will be profoundly missed by all who knew and loved them.

Born on January 7, 1944, in Sta. Rosa, Nueva Ecija, Philippines.  She was a passionate teacher in the early years of her career, an efficient leader and co-worker at the Philippine Government Service Agency, and for two decades, was an inspiring and dedicated Entertainment Director at the New East Side Nursing Home in New York City.  She was known by her peers for her intellect, natural skills and thoughtfulness.  She was a talented illustrator and painter, an athlete and a graceful dancer.  She enjoyed sewing and crafting.  Her love for the art and nostalgic music kept her inspired.  She raised her children on her own with her independence, strength, compassion and strong Catholic faith.

She was pre-deceased by her parents, Moises and Agripina Cruz, her beloved great-grandmother Impo, and brother Celso Cruz.

She is survived by her daughter Roselie and her husband Thomas D. Halik, Sr; her grandchildren LeighAnn, Samantha, Thomas Jr. and Harrison, all of Wake Forest, NC; her son Ricky Velasco and his wife Zaidy and children Gabriel and Rafael of Manila, Philippines; her granddaughters Claudine, Maxine and Kristine, all of California; her son Rosendo Velasco Jr. and wife Ederly; her granddaughter Madeleine Dingal and husband Joel, her grandson Ross and wife Valerie; her great-grandson Rai Jin; her granddaughter Shannen Velasco, all of Baltimore, MD;  her son Rainier Velasco and wife Cristine; her grandsons Lance and Royce, all of Green Cove Springs, FL; her sisters Esterlita Ramos (and family) and Luzviminda Cruz; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, who will continue to cherish the memories they shared and that She shall forever remain in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have been touched by her kindness, leaving behind a timeless example of strength, compassion and dignity.

A Memorial Service celebrating Ligaya’s life will be held on May 30, 2025 at 10:30 AM in the Chapel of Russell Haven of Rest with Deacon Kenneth Laybourn officiating.
