James “Jim” Howard Reed, 73

James “Jim” Howard Reed, 73, of Middleburg, FL passed away Thursday, October 30, 2025.  Jim was born in Buffalo, NY to the late Clifford and Esther Reed.  Moving to Northeast Florida in 1973, Jim proudly served his country in the United States Navy for 24 years before retiring as a Master Chief.  He went on to work another 19 years at NADEP, as well as two more years with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office in the county jail.  Jim’s interest in current events was demonstrated by the enjoyment he found in reading the newspaper and researching the topics that grabbed his attention, as well as watching movies.
Jim was known for his conscientious nature, attention to detail, and high personal standards, which he encouraged in those around him.  He had great communication skills, was a good listener and showed compassion to those around him.  While generous and helpful, Jim also fostered independence in his children by encouraging them to find solutions on their own.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Esther Reed; his sister, Pat Miller; and his daughter, Becca Reed Hardy.  He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Melissa Reed; daughter, Stephanie Reed; brother-in-law, Jim Miller; niece, Vickie Beckley; nephews, Danny Beckley; and his granddaughter, Maria, who lovingly calls him “Papa”.
