Irma Bell Johnson, 77, of Green Cove Springs, FL passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2025. She was born in Jacksonville, FL to the late Willie L. Bell and Ruby Glover Bell and was a lifelong resident of northeast Florida, moving to Green Cove Springs in the 60s. Irma graduated from Paxon High School in Jacksonville as part of the class of 1966. After moving to Clay County, she worked at Wright’s Clay County Farms where she and her husband, Kenny, raised their family. Irma also worked at McDonald’s for several years and won the McDonald’s Scratch Biscuit Award. She later worked for the City of Green Cove Springs as a senior customer service representative where she retired in 2013 after serving the city for eleven years. Irma was known for being dependable, hardworking, and efficient as she took pride in her work.
A member of Harbor Baptist Church, Irma’s faith was of significant value to her. She truly enjoyed life, especially when she was reading, painting ceramics, cooking her famous biscuits, enjoying her plants or traveling. She also enjoyed Halloween where you would find her dressed in costume and handing out candy. Irma volunteered for several years at the Clay County Fair in the Early Florida Village, where she cooked in the Baxley House. Most of all, Irma loved her family, especially her grandchildren who call her “Granny”.
Irma was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Ruby Bell; and three brothers, Ed Bell, David Bell, and Bill Bell; and her brother-in-law, James E. Johnson. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Kenneth “Kenny” Johnson, Sr.; two sons, Kenny Johnson, Jr. (Tracy) and James “Brad” Johnson (Hannah); two daughters, Christina Rogers (Gene Jr.) , Darlena Chaney; four brothers, Bud Bell (Janie), Olivan Bell (Martha), John Bell (Nadine) and Charles Bell (Tina); five sisters, Anna Laura Croft, Ruby Mae Price (John), Willow Mae Gay, Edith McStephenson (Bill), and Glenda Kelley (Wendell); sister-in-law, Teresa Jones (Ricky); nine grandchildren, Kenney Rogers, Gene Rogers III (Robin), Tiffany Melvin (Ben), Maegan Chaney, Kelcey Johnson, Kylie Johnson, James Levi Johnson, Mykala Johnson, Traci Johnson, four great-grandchildren, Ruby Rogers, Opal Rogers, Jasper Rogers, and Camden Garry; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. Her kind heart and gentle spirit will be missed by too many people to count.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 25, 2025 at 11:00am in the chapel at Russell Haven of Rest with Pastor Warren Chesser officiating. Burial will follow in the Heritage Section of Russell Haven of Rest. Visitation with the family will begin one hour prior to services at 10:00am in the chapel.
