Gordon Wallace Brown (Doc), 87

Gordon Wallace Brown (Doc) went home to be with his Lord in the early hours of Monday, April 6, 2026. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Carolyn Luther Brown; daughter Tracy (Partridge), son Mitchell and his wife Julie; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at Pinewood Presbyterian Church, 198 Knight Boxx Rd, Middleburg, FL 32068.

Born December 31, 1938, in Chicago, IL, to Gordon Whipple Brown and Alice Wallace Brown, Gordon graduated from Lehigh University (BS, 1960) and the Illinois Institute of Technology (MS/PhD, 1967). He began his academic career in the Engineering Department at the University of Pittsburgh (1967-1975).

A short-term mission trip to Zambia with his family in 1971 changed the trajectory of his life. In 1976, Gordon and Carolyn returned to Zambia as full-time mission co-workers, where he taught management and administration skills to Zambians in industry. In 1979 the family moved to Nairobi, Kenya, where he joined CORAT Africa, a Kenyan organization providing training and consulting to churches and Christian organizations throughout the continent. There he trained pastors and church leaders in management from a Christian perspective and consulted on projects ranging from mission hospitals and schools to church-run development initiatives. He also helped establish the first IEEE Electrical Engineering chapter in Nairobi and authored a series of development papers known as Insights. His students gave him the name “Doc Brown”, a nickname that followed him ever after.

Gordon’s love of singing led him to learn guitar and build a repertoire of some 350 songs, shared freely wherever the moment arose: church services, campfires, and airport lounges alike. He was an avid rock climber and cyclist during his Kenya years, and upon transitioning to an adult trike in 2020, quietly sparked a movement: today, trikes are a common sight throughout Penney Retirement Community.

Though he “retired” in 1996, Gordon and Carolyn remained in Kenya for another decade, investing in people as the Lord led them. In 2006 they returned to the US and made their home at Penney Retirement Community, where they continued to pour their time, wisdom, and gifts into the lives of those around them.

Throughout their lives together, they opened their home to many, offering a home away from home, and a living witness to the love of God.

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in memory of Gordon to any of the following:
