John Alan McCarty, Jr., 38

John Alan McCarty, Jr., 38, passed away on June 27, 2025, in Orange Park, FL. Born in Albany, GA on August 13, 1986, John was a loving father, brother, son, nephew and member of the Cool Cousins Club. John was raised in Owatonna, MN by his mother Kristy and his stepdad “Pop”, Andrew Fretham. The family moved to Orange Park, FL in 2003 where John completed his high school education. Following in Andrew’s footsteps he pursued a career in the site and utilities construction industry, excelling in various positions and most recently worked for the Town of Orange Park and JD Hinson. During the last several months, John assisted his family with the daily care of his grandmother, holding her hand while watching her favorite westerns on TV and until she fell asleep each night after saying their nightly prayers together. He had a sweet soul, a gentle nature and the most contagious laugh.

John was an avid Georgia Bulldogs fan and enjoyed hunting and being with his family. His greatest love was for his two boys, John Alan McCarty, III and Jaxson Ash McCarty. Spending time teaching them to play sports and reading with them were among his favorite things to do.

John was preceded in death by his mother, Kristy Swanson Fretham, his grandparents, Don and Marcelyn Swanson and great-grandmother, Ferol Spinks Cosper. In addition to his children he is survived by his stepfather, Andrew Fretham (Jacksonville, FL), his brothers Jacob McCarty (Allison) Yulee, FL, Jayson Fretham (Hope) Jacksonville, FL, his nieces Blakely and Georgia Fretham, his father, John McCarty, Sr., half-sisters Alana and Alyssa McCarty, Las Vegas, NV, former spouse Courtney McCarty, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A memorial service to honor John’s life will be held Thursday, July 17, 2025, at 2:00p.m. at Russell Haven of Rest Funeral Home, 2335 Sandridge Rd., Green Cove Springs, FL 32043.
